Immune Boosting Yummy Gummy Bears

Kids are tough enough to get food down, let alone vitamins or anything else! Can I get a raise of hands moms and dads out there? While my son is finally showing signs of improving on the eating front, my daughter has decided if it’s not a mandarin, cookie, or hot dog she wants no part of it. At least we have the mandarin going for us. I know the eating paradox is a frustration I share with many of you. That’s why I wanted to share this super simple, immune boosting, yummy,  gummy bear recipe today!

Easy & tasty immune boosting gummy bears. 100% fruit juice, sweetened with honey, filled wiht vitamin c and elderberry syrup.

For the last year, inevitably whenever we went to Costco my son would spot the huge container of fruit snacks from across the store. One he saw it, it was over. “Please mom please, gummies!!!! Please!?!”

Gummies from the store have so many unnecessary ingredients though, so I was always hesitant but did give in from time to time. I knew there had to be a better option though, and a cheaper one than Annie’s organic bunny fruit snacks. I might have to mortgage my home over if I was going to buy them often! If you’ve been following me long, you will know my first thought is how can I turn these home made gummies into good for you ones. Stuffed with things my kids need, all in a little sweet bear they would enjoy. I researched and came up with the perfect solution that received rave reviews from my two picky food critics, oh wait, I mean kids.

Let’s cover the health benefits of these sweet little guys quickly so we can get to the recipe! These colorful little bears are filled with four powerhouse ingredients that make a big impact on health.

Beef Gelatin

The gelatin in these isn’t used just because it’s the thickening agent, beef gelatin is packed full of collagen and protein that:

  • Keeps bones healthy and strong
  • Has natural glycine which promotes healthy immune, digestive, and central nervous systems
  • Supports skin, healthier hair, and stronger nails
  • Supports joint health

I use the Vital Proteins Collagen Protein, because I know it’s the highest quality. The gelatin comes from pasture raised, grass-fed beef. You could use a gelatin like Knox, but all they list on their ingredient label is gelatin, so you have no idea how it was sourced and know nothing of the quality, which immediately sends up red flags to me personally.

Black Elderberry Syrup

Elderberries naturally contain A, B, and C and stimulate the immune system. It’s a great preventative for the cold and flu if taken daily throughout the winter months. If you do come down with it, double up by taking it twice a day for faster healing time. I use Gaia Herbs Black Elderberry Syrup, 5.4 Ounce.

Vitamin C Crystal Powder

Vitamin C is great for the immune system, this is a universal truth we don’t argue with. However, it also has a great leg up on cancer as well!

“Vitamin C crystals can help flush healthy cells of toxins, effectively reducing inflammation and the possibility of cell mutation. In fact, the Cancer Treatment Centers of America successfully lobbied the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to use vitamin C as an alternative cancer treatment.” Via Live Strong

Plus, the Vitamin C has a subtle tang that I think makes the gummies that much better!

100% Grape Juice

You may be thinking hu? Grape juice? Yep! I give it to my kids every day because it’s a great preventative for the stomach flu! You might think it’s a little crazy, but google “grape juice and the stomach flu” and see everything that comes up. Lots of people swear by it as a preventative, and so do I!

Grape juice helps keep the pH of your intestines (where the virus lives) alkaline which doesn’t allow the stomach flu, or norovirus as it’s truly called, to grow well. I’ve been giving my kids grape juice (Welch’s sugar free 100% frozen concentrate) for the past two years and have avoided any sign of the flu. Even after my sister who lives with us kissed my son goodbye and was home hours later sick as a dog! And if your child or you do contract it while being on grape juice, it seems to not be as severe.

Now that we know how amazing the ingredients are, let’s get to the fun part, making and enjoying these Gummy Bears!

I used Candy Silicone Molds & Ice Cube Trays, SENHAI 3 Pack Gumdrop Jelly Molds, Chocolate Molds, Gummy Bear Candy Molds – Bear. The set was inexpensive and worked perfectly. I might end up getting one more set so I can do the whole batch at once and not have to pop out and re-use the molds because the recipe makes so many! Each mold holds 50, and the entire recipe makes 350 gummies. If you don’t have molds you can grease a cookie sheet or use wax paper and slice them up into cubes once set.

I placed the molds on a cookie sheet since the silicone is bendable and you need a hard flat surface when filling the molds.

The kids can enjoy these sweet treats daily, never realizing the health benefits stored inside each little purple bear. You as a parent will feel good knowing your picky eaters are actually getting some sort of nutrition inside their little bodies. I call that winning!

Easy and Tasty Immune Boosting Gummy Bears
These little bears will be a highlight in your kids day, and you can feel like a super parent because they are so full of health benefits. The kids will never guess!

  1. In a saucepan simmer juice, water, and honey until almost boiling.
  2. Remove from heat and whisk in gelatin, one tablespoon at a time until thoroughly dissolved. Add in the vitamin c and elderberry syrup, stir.
  3. Use the dropper that came with your molds to fill them up. Place in the fridge for about 20 minutes and then simply pop them out! Each mold makes 50 bears, so I kept the gelatin on very low heat and as soon as I removed all the gummies from one mold I would refill it and place back in the fridge, grab one that was ready and pop it out, and then refill. Do this until all gelatin is in molds.
  4. Place gummies in a sealed container and store in the fridge for up to 10 days. I give the kids about 15 gummies each per day and this works out about perfect. I always take a small handful for myself too. No shame though! They are just as good for me as they are for the kids!

Coffee + Protein = Love

Getting in enough protein has always been a struggle for me. As a busy mom, fitness coach, blogger, and runner of the home I simply don’t have enough hours in the day. I’m sure most of you can relate! I meal prep and try to plan ahead as much as possible, but some days it doesn’t happen, or I simply need a little extra protein to meet my quota.

Mind blown! I mean, my love for coffee is apparent, as well as my love for this substitute. Some afternoons though, I just need a real cup to keep me going. And if it has protein in it? Well sign me up!

Let’s be clear here, I don’t believe in drinking all your nutrition each day. I see some people desperate to lose weight and build muscle adding a scoop of protein to almost every meal. Just no you guys. That makes me cringe!

Now, I do drink Shakeology every darn day. But it’s not because of the protein. It’s my holistic, superfood, vitamin shake that keeps my anxiety and depression at bay. It also contains micronutrients, probiotics, helps stimulate the metabolism, as well as repair muscles, among many other things. I’m a firm believer that the soil most of our crops are gown in is damaged and nutrient deprived, so obviously our food is as well. Shakeology is my key to making sure I’m giving my body what it needs to stay at optimal health. Besides the occasional extra scoop of protein here and there, I am mostly eating my nutrition. But you guys, some days it’s tough to remember to eat on time, and eat enough protein. Am I the only one who gets so overly starved that I could inhale a whole pizza? Yes I said whole, and yes, I’ve done it before. #noregrets

Just kidding, I totally regretted it.

Anyhow! When I saw this lovely protein coffee by BuzzFit I was immediately intrigued. It sounded too good to be true. I didn’t have to stay curious long however, because the company was more than willing to let me review it!

Well, How Does It Taste?!

With a little bit of nervousness I made my first cup. I really wanted to love it but was afraid to be disappointed. I shouldn’t have worried though, because it was yummy and hit the spot! Very bold and rich. I guess I was expecting more of a latte flavor? Not sure why. I do like mine with a little almond milk, and the creaminess of it cuts the boldness a bit. But if you like it strong, as in your coffee black, it will be great. With a touch of almond milk I’m a happy camper. I’ve also added some vanilla to it, a little hazelnut extract as well, and both have been great. You could also make a coffee protein shake! Really you could use it a ton of ways. I also think it would be amazing as an add-in to hot cocoa. Coffee cocoa? Maybe my love for coffee is taking this one a little far, but I’m totally trying it.

The container comes with 16 servings. Each serving is 2 Tablespoons and contains 10 grams of protein, 2 carbs, 0.5 of fat, and rings in at 60 calories. The ingredients are simply whey protein and Colombian coffee.

I’ll be keeping this as a staple for those days mama is lacking in protein and patience, and needs a warm cup to keep her upright. 😉

I feel the term “health coach” is thrown around rather loosely. What does “Health Coach” truly mean? Let’s look at the definition:

Health Coach 101: Do your research

Some coaches are honest and out to make an impact on others. They are dedicated to learning and enhancing the experience you have as a customer and helping you achieve your goals. Others are out only to make an income. How do you know who is who? I mean, it’s not wrong but rather completely necessary for coaches to make an income. This is their chosen career path. But, you want to make sure your money is spent wisely right?

How Long Have They Been At It?

How long have you followed this person? Are they consistent in their posting? I believe in all kinds of coaches. I am a Beachbody coach and know other BB coaches who have changed peoples lives. Hundreds of peoples lives! They are good at what they do and they do it with consistency and dedication. I also know Beachbody coaches who are horrible. It’s a sad, simple fact. Anyone can be a coach. It’s just like opening your own business. Anyone can open a business, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be successful.

Do You Connect With Their Personality?

Every coach has their own style of coaching, and their personalities shine through. Make sure you feel like you connect to that person. Results are going to be better that way!

Do You Connect Or Are Intrigued By Their Lifestyle?

Some coaches (like me for example) tend to lean towards holistic living and advocate for natural wellness. Others have different approaches. I love running and have several half marathons under my belt as well as one full. Other coaches like body building, bikini competing, or CrossFit. That may be something you would like to try in the future. Make sure that even if you aren’t necessarily living like your coach, it’s something that you could see yourself doing as you learn more and become educated in health and wellness.

Understand YOU Are Going To Have To Do The Work

Your coach can give you amazing information and be super motivating and wiling to help you improve your life, but they can’t do it for you. You have to come at this with a willingness to work through lack of motivation and pushing through the hard days. Your coach will be there to encourage and push you to be better, but in the end you are the only one that can put in the time and work.

Make Sure They Are Well Rounded

A coach that only talks fitness but doesn’t hit on nutrition is missing a vital component. That’s why I love coaching through Beachbody. We provide you with all the tools to be successful, and then make sure you are using them properly and answer any questions you have. I plug you into an online community where I’m with you as long as you need me, dedicated to seeing you hit your goals. If you don’t connect with me, make sure you find someone who is well rounded! I’m not everyone’s cup of tea, and that’s okay! More than anything I want you to see results, and that happens when you work with someone you feel connected to, and is knowledgeable and well rounded in all things health related.
